Contractor May Lose Job of Running Bryan Golf CourseContractor May Lose Job of Running Bryan Golf Course

Sep. 5--The city of Bryan may take over operations of the Bryan Municipal Golf Course next month, and the City Council on Tuesday will vote on the purchase of more than $670,000 worth of equipment to do so. City staff members recommend that the council not include funding for the course's contractor, Golf Solutions, in the 2009 fiscal year budget, Deputy City Manager Hugh Walker said. Golf Solutions has operated the city-owned course for four years. The company's owner, Trey Stiles, declined to comment Thursday. Walker said he thought the city's Parks and Recreation Department, under the leadership of new Director Darrell Lovelette, could operate the course more effectively. "Any time you operate something yourself, you have a little more control," he said. Officials plan to improve the course with the nearly $80,000 that would have funded Golf Solutions' oversight, Walker said. The 2009 fiscal year budget is to be adopted Tuesday and ratified Sept. 16. The fiscal year begins Oct. 1, when the city will take over management of the course if the council approves the idea. At Tuesday's meeting, council members will consider spending up to $232,703 on the purchase of golf carts and more than $444,000 for the purchase of turf equipment for the course. The long-term plans for the course are yet to be decided, Walker said. A study is being conducted to determine the "highest and best use for the property," he said. Golfers are likely to notice only a positive change in the course's management, he said.
